Brian Curley, ASGCA — Principal, Schmidt-Curley Design

Brian Curley is a renowned golf course architect with a career spanning more than three decades. Raised in Pebble Beach, California, he developed an appreciation for the game through playing, caddying, and working at local golf courses. After graduating from the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo School of Architecture in 1982, Brian began his career with Landmark Golf Company as a land planner before focusing exclusively on golf course design and construction, working on numerous projects with the legendary Pete Dye.

In 1997, he co-founded Schmidt-Curley Design with Lee Schmidt. While designing numerous courses in the California Desert, the firm also became a leader in golf course development throughout Asia, particularly in China. Brian’s design portfolio includes all 12 courses at Mission Hills Shenzhen and the 10 courses at Mission Hills Haikou, known as the “World’s Largest Golf Club.”

In recent years, Brian has expanded his work throughout Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, and Saudi Arabia, while also taking on significant domestic projects, including the renovation of Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport Beach.

A longtime member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Brian has received numerous industry honors, including GOLF Magazine’s “Architect of the Year,” Asian Golf Monthly’s “Best Golf Course Architect – Asia Pacific” for seven consecutive years, and recognition as one of Golf Inc.’s “Most Influential Architects.” He also serves on GOLF Magazine’s “Top 100 Courses in the World” panel.
